My helmets are an expression of the paradox of man’s choice of placing his greatest efforts of science and creativity into devices of war and destruction. The designs of these helmets are inspired by the Greek Archaic period, the history of which fueled the romantic myths of war and heroism in European culture. By creating the pieces in glass, this hard yet brittle material, I wish to articulate this paradox in human nature. Historically helmets were made to protect, the ones I create are as fragile as an egg. This intentional contradiction suggests that the use of science and material technology to manufacture things defensive or aggressive as a solution is an illusion and ultimately doomed to failure.
In my work the visual power of materials and form link mythological and historical references. I try to unlock the essence of these stories and myths and apply them in a contemporary and thought provoking manner.
I have pursued this glass casting technique almost exclusively for the past 20 years and it remains the perfect way in which to express my ideas. It is a challenging, unique and very time consuming method of creating glass pieces but the results achieved through this process can be extraordinary.
