Artist Statement
The Osage Series has focused on the theme of landscape. I have attempted not only to convey a visual image, but to express and suggest the experience of the landscape. These pieces have been influenced by my direct experience of such dramatic environments as the ice-encrusted mountains of Greenland and the red-rock towers of Sedona, Arizona, as well as the quieter landscape of the Osage Hills near my home.
Technique

The Osage pieces are created as follows:

The Osage sculptures begin in the studio as a block of optical quality lead crystal. I then melt the glass in order to change it's form. The goal is to get the block of lead crystal into a shape that is closer to the desired final form. In other words, I might start with a block of glass that is similar in shape to a loaf of bread and form it in a kiln to the shape of a watermelon wedge. This process of heating and cooling in the kiln may take as much as 3 weeks or longer depending on it's size and shape.

The next process is one of cutting, grinding and polishing to achieve the final form. This is done with numerous different machines, large and small, from diamond saws and belt sanders to felt polishing wheels.
